International S13: Specs, Service Intervals, Lifespan & Common Problems
The International S13 is a 13-liter inline-six diesel. It is sold only as part of the S13 Integrated Powertrain with the T14 transmission. It makes up to 515 hp and 1,850 lb-ft, with full torque available at 900 rpm. International publishes a B10 design life of 1,200,000 miles and a 60-month/500,000-mile base major-components warranty. It launched in August 2022, so it has no long high-mileage track record yet.

How long does a International S13 last?
International states a B10 design life of 1,200,000 miles for the S13. B10 means the mileage by which 10% of a group of engines is expected to have needed a major overhaul. It is a design target for the early-failure tail, not a guarantee or an average. Here's the honest catch. The S13 launched in August 2022, so nobody has real-world data at anywhere near that mileage yet. The number is a design claim that time hasn't tested.
Warranty, as the OEM lists it
- Base engine: 24 months, unlimited miles, unlimited hours
- Base major components: 60 months / 500,000 miles (800,000 km)
- Optional engine coverage: up to 72 months / 600,000 miles (960,000 km)
- Optional major components: up to 84 months / 700,000 miles (1,120,000 km)
- Some terms carry footnotes on International's page. Read the conditions before you rely on the optional coverage
How often should you change the oil in a International S13?
The International specification sheet we reviewed lists the engine's oil capacity but not a duty-cycle oil interval table. So this page doesn't print an interval. Get the interval for your setup from International's service documents.
- The S13 is an integrated powertrain. The engine, T14 transmission and aftertreatment are designed together. So service planning is done against the whole system, not the engine alone.
Put your interval on a schedule with the maintenance scheduler.
What are the common problems with the International S13?
There isn't a meaningful repair-industry pattern to report for the S13 yet. That's the honest finding, not a gap. The engine launched in August 2022. The reliability material available is manufacturer-published or from early-mileage customer testimonials (trucks in the tens of thousands of miles). It is not high-mileage experience. Until independent high-mileage data exists, reliability claims about this engine in either direction are unproven.
How does it compare with other heavy-duty engines?

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does an International S13 last?+
International publishes a B10 design life of 1,200,000 miles. That means 10% of engines are expected to need a major overhaul by that point. But the S13 launched in August 2022, so no engine of its age has shown anything near that mileage in real use. Treat it as a design target. Lean on the written warranty as the firmer commitment: 60 months/500,000 miles for base major components.
Is the International S13 reliable?+
It's too new to say from real-world data. International reports strong testing results. Early owner testimonials describe trucks with tens of thousands of miles and no shop visits. But that's early-mileage experience from the manufacturer's own materials. There's no high-mileage track record or independent failure study yet. So anyone claiming certainty either way is going beyond the evidence.
Can I buy an S13 without the T14 transmission?+
No. The S13 is sold as an integrated powertrain with the T14 14-speed automated transmission and its aftertreatment system, all designed together. You can't pair it with an outside transmission brand the way you can with some other OEM engines.
