What does a semi truck breakdown actually cost?

A breakdown's full cost is the repair bill plus towing, emergency labor rates and the revenue you lose while the truck sits. Towing a Class 8 truck commonly runs several hundred to over a thousand dollars depending on distance, and emergency or after-hours labor rates run higher than a scheduled shop visit. The biggest cost for most owner-operators is the lost revenue from downtime, not the repair itself, since a truck earns nothing while it is parked.

  1. Get the shop's estimate for parts and labor before you approve a major repair.
  2. Add towing separately. It is billed by distance and truck type, and is rarely included in the repair quote.
  3. Add emergency or after-hours labor rates if the breakdown happens outside normal shop hours.
  4. Multiply your average daily revenue, or your target rate per mile times your daily miles, by the days you expect to be down. That is your downtime cost.
  5. Add repair, towing and downtime together for the breakdown's full cost, not just the invoice total.
The four cost buckets in a breakdown
Cost bucketWhat drives it
Parts and laborThe component that failed and the shop's labor rate
TowingDistance to the nearest capable shop and the type of tow needed
Emergency or after-hours laborShops commonly charge more outside normal business hours
Downtime (lost revenue)Your daily revenue or target rate times the days the truck is down

Repair costs vary widely by component, truck age and region, so this tool asks for your own estimate rather than assuming a fixed price. Its towing line is a planning guess unless you enter a quote: a base of $375 in a city, $600 in a rural area or $1,050 in a remote one, plus $8, $12 or $15 a mile past the first 5 miles, and 1.5 times that at night, on weekends or holidays. Towing companies set their own rates, so get a quote. The hotel line uses the federal government's $113 standard nightly lodging rate for October 2026 to September 2027 as a stand-in, and meals use the IRS $80 a day. Lost revenue is revenue, not profit, since fuel and other costs stop while the truck is parked. The reserve per mile depends on how many breakdowns a year and miles a month you enter.

Frequently Asked Questions - Breakdown Cost Estimator

How much does a semi truck breakdown cost?
Add the tow, the repair, hotel and meals while you wait, and the revenue lost while the truck is down. The lost revenue is often the biggest part. Enter the location, repair cost, nights in a hotel, days down and your daily revenue in the estimator. You will see each piece and the total in days of profit lost.
How much does a semi truck recovery or tow cost?
Every towing company sets its own rates, and they differ a lot. Two 2026 rate sheets that Idaho towing companies filed with the Idaho Transportation Department show the range. Prime Towing lists a $550 medium and heavy hook fee plus $6 a mile, wreckers at $550 to $1,750 an hour, and a rotator at $3,500 an hour. Torch Towing lists a heavy hook fee of $300 an hour, $6.50 a loaded mile and a rotator at $950 an hour. Hourly work often has a two-hour minimum. The estimator uses planning numbers of its own, not a published rate card, so get a quote before the tow.
How much does semi truck maintenance and repair cost per mile?
ATRI's 2026 Operational Costs of Trucking report (2025 data) puts repair and maintenance at about 40 cents per mile, up 8.6 percent from 2024. Tires add about 5 cents per mile. Over 100,000 miles that is roughly $40,000 for repairs and maintenance. A newer truck under warranty can run below the average, and an older one above it.
Does insurance cover a semi truck breakdown?
Standard liability and physical damage coverage does not pay for a mechanical failure. Options include a roadside assistance or towing add-on, and mechanical breakdown or extended warranty coverage. In some cases there is downtime or loss-of-use coverage. Terms, waiting periods and exclusions vary widely. So read the policy before you rely on it.
How much should I set aside for breakdowns?
The estimator's Reserve CPM Needed shows the cost per mile to set aside. It assumes a breakdown like the one you entered happens about once every six months at 10,000 miles a month. Putting that amount aside on every mile turns a surprise bill into a planned cost.
