Wholesale price
$4.91

Wholesale diesel rose 4 cents last week, to $4.91. Pump prices usually follow wholesale prices within a week or two, so this is the first place a change shows up.
What this means for your fuel surcharge
Brokers and shippers often set a fuel surcharge from this weekly national price. When diesel goes above the base price in your contract, you get paid the difference on every mile.
surcharge per mile = (diesel price - base price) / miles per gallon
At $6.18 a gallon, with a base price of $3.50 and a truck that gets 6.5 miles per gallon, the surcharge is ($6.18 - $3.50) / 6.5 = $0.41 per mile. On a 500-mile trip that is $206.08.
The base price and mpg above are an example. Your contract sets the real ones.

The U.S. average retail diesel price is $6.18 per gallon for the week of October 12, 2026, down 2 cents from last week and 69% above a year ago, according to EIA, the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The West Coast region is the highest at $7.24. The Lower Atlantic region is the lowest at $5.64.
The U.S. average is down 2 cents this week, to $6.18 per gallon. Wholesale diesel rose 4 cents last week, to $4.91. Pump prices usually follow wholesale prices within a week or two, so more increases at the pump are possible in the next week or two. EIA's monthly outlook expects the average to fall to about $4.11 by Dec 2027. Forecasts change every month.
Over the past 13 months the U.S. average diesel price ranged from $3.46 (week of January 12, 2026) to $6.53 (week of September 21, 2026). This week's price is $0.35 below the 13-month high. EIA's weekly data goes back decades, so check EIA's history page for the all-time record.
A fuel surcharge is extra money a shipper or broker pays on top of the linehaul rate when diesel costs more than an agreed base price. It helps the carrier cover fuel costs that move up and down. It is usually shown as cents per mile or a percentage of the linehaul rate.
The common formula is (current diesel price - base price) / miles per gallon, which gives the surcharge per mile. At $6.18 a gallon, with a base price of $3.50 and a truck that gets 6.5 miles per gallon, the surcharge is ($6.18 - $3.50) / 6.5 = $0.41 per mile. On a 500-mile trip that is $206.08. Your contract sets the base price, the mpg and which diesel price is used, so read those terms before you agree.
No law requires a fuel surcharge. It is a term in the rate confirmation or contract, so the shipper or broker and the carrier agree on it. Many schedules use the weekly U.S. average on-highway diesel price that EIA publishes, which is the price on this page. Get the schedule in writing before you accept the load.
Most weekly schedules change once a week, when EIA publishes the new national average on Monday. Some contracts reset monthly, so ask which one applies to you.
They come straight from EIA, the U.S. Energy Information Administration, which surveys retail stations for its weekly on-highway diesel price and publishes it on Mondays. We show the numbers as EIA publishes them and never adjust them. EIA publishes the national average, seven regional averages and California. It does not publish a price for each state or each station.
California is at $8.09 this week, $1.91 above the national average. The West Coast region is at $7.24. State fuel taxes and local supply rules differ from state to state, and California has one of the highest state diesel taxes in the country.
EIA publishes averages by region, not the price at each pump. Use our toll and route planner to see the average price for every state your route crosses, plus truck stops and diesel stations along the way, then check your fuel card app for pump prices at the stops you pick.
How to read these numbers
Prices are the U.S. Energy Information Administration's weekly retail on-highway diesel prices, published on Mondays (latest: October 12, 2026). We show them unchanged. They are averages, not the price at one pump. EIA publishes the national average, seven regions and California only, so a state that is not California uses its region's average.
