Volvo D13: Specs, Service Intervals, Lifespan & Common Problems
The Volvo D13 is a 13-liter inline-six diesel and the only engine offered in the Volvo VNL. It comes in standard variable-geometry turbo and turbo-compound versions. Volvo lists 5.16 × 6.22 in bore and stroke, an 18:1 compression ratio, and 500 hp of engine-brake power at 2,200 rpm. Mack lists the same bore, stroke and displacement for its MP8, but with a different compression ratio.
Figures taken from the manufacturer's own published documents. Last reviewed September 23, 2026.

How long does a Volvo D13 last?
The Volvo D13 page we reviewed doesn't state a design-life mileage or warranty terms, so this page doesn't print either. Get the warranty in writing for the specific truck. Volvo's one published claim on that page about the current D13 packaging is a "one-box" aftertreatment system. Volvo says it is 17 lb lighter than its previous system. That's a weight claim, not a durability claim.

How often should you change the oil in a Volvo D13?
Volvo publishes oil drain intervals by model year and duty cycle in its own Service at a Glance documents. They changed between engine generations. So this page doesn't reprint a single number that could be wrong for your truck. Use Volvo's current maintenance-intervals page for your model year.
- An older Volvo D13 family brochure lists a 55,000-mile normal-service oil drain for applications at 6 mpg or better. But Volvo's intervals changed between engine generations. Don't apply that figure to a newer truck without checking.
- PACCAR and Detroit both tie their longest interval to low idle time and better mpg. Check Volvo's documents for how your model year treats idle-heavy duty.
Put your interval on a schedule with the maintenance scheduler.
What are the common problems with the Volvo D13?
For the D13, repair-industry sources most often mention four areas. Several reports specifically concern early-2010s engines. So the model year matters a lot here.
- Fuel injectors and injector cups
- Injector failures on high-mileage engines are commonly reported. Injector-cup problems in particular are cited for some 2012-era engines.
- EGR cooler and valve
- Soot buildup and thermal stress are reported to stick EGR valves and crack coolers on older engines. Coolant loss and white smoke are the warning signs.
- Turbo actuator
- Turbo wear and actuator failures are commonly reported on higher-mileage trucks.
- DEF and aftertreatment
- DEF system faults are reported as very common on modern Volvos. Many of them trigger a speed-limited derate.
There is no public, independent failure-rate data for any heavy-duty diesel. So this section isn't a defect ranking. It lists the repair categories that shops and parts suppliers repeatedly report for this engine. Those sources sell repairs and parts, which is worth remembering. The same handful of systems (EGR, turbo, aftertreatment, fuel system) show up on every modern SCR-equipped diesel. Treat these as things to inspect on a used truck and to watch on your own, not as odds.
When a warning light comes on, decode it with the fault code lookup. Before you buy a used truck, run the VIN decoder and the used truck inspection checklist.
How does it compare with other heavy-duty engines?
Each engine guide on this site follows the same format and the same sourcing rule, so you can read them side by side.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Volvo D13 the same as the Mack MP8?+
They're closely related but not identical. Both are Volvo Group 13-liter inline-sixes. Both makers list the same 5.16 × 6.22 in (131 × 158 mm) bore and stroke and 780 cu in displacement. But the compression ratios listed differ, 18:1 for the D13 versus 16:1 for the MP8. The listed engine-brake power is reached at different speeds (2,200 rpm versus 2,100 rpm). They're related engines, not the same one under two names.
How long does a Volvo D13 last?+
The Volvo D13 page we reviewed doesn't state a design-life mileage. So no specific figure is coming from Volvo's own page. Independent data doesn't exist either. What you can control is following Volvo's interval for your model year and duty cycle. Also check the service record on any used truck.
What are the common problems with the Volvo D13?+
Repair-industry sources most often report injector and injector-cup failures, EGR cooler and valve problems, turbo actuator wear, and DEF/aftertreatment faults. Much of the talk focuses on early-2010s engines. Those sources sell repairs, and no independent failure-rate study exists.
How often should I change the oil in a Volvo D13?+
It depends on model year and duty cycle. Volvo's intervals changed between generations. One older Volvo D13 brochure lists 55,000 miles for normal service at 6 mpg or better. But don't assume that for a newer truck. Use Volvo's own maintenance-intervals page for your exact model year, not a single figure from a forum.
