How much do semi truck tires cost per mile?

Tire cost per mile is the price of a tire divided by the miles it lasts before replacement. A full 18-tire set on a tractor-trailer is a major expense, and tires typically run tens of thousands of miles before they need replacing, so the real comparison between tire choices is cost per mile, not sticker price. A cheaper tire that wears out sooner can cost more per mile than a pricier tire that lasts longer, and a tire with lower rolling resistance can also lower your fuel cost per mile.

  1. Enter what you paid for a tire (or a full set) and track the miles it runs before replacement or retread.
  2. Divide price by miles run to get cost per mile for that tire or position (steer, drive or trailer).
  3. Compare that cost per mile across tire brands or models, not just the sticker price.
  4. If a tire is advertised as lower rolling resistance, weigh its fuel-savings claim against its price and expected mileage, since both affect your total cost per mile.
  5. Track tire cost per mile the same way you track fuel cost per mile, since both are major variable costs.
Why cost per mile beats sticker price for comparing tires
FactorWhy it matters
Purchase priceThe upfront cost, but not the full picture
Expected tread life (miles)A longer-lasting tire can cost less per mile even at a higher price
Retread eligibilityA casing built for retreading can lower the effective cost per mile over multiple lives
Rolling resistanceAffects fuel cost per mile, a separate but related cost

Tire prices and tread life vary by brand, position, duty cycle and region, so this tool works from your own purchase price and mileage rather than a fixed industry average.

Frequently Asked Questions - Tire Cost Analyzer

How long do semi-truck tires typically last?
Tire life varies by position, duty cycle and maintenance: steer tires generally wear fastest, drive tires run longer, and trailer tires typically last the longest of the three. Proper inflation, rotation and alignment all meaningfully extend tire life regardless of position, so track your own mileage per tire rather than relying on a single published figure.
Should I buy new tires or retreads for my truck?
Steer tires are almost universally run new for safety reasons. Drive and trailer position tires are commonly run as quality retreads, which cost meaningfully less than new while performing well for most fleets, provided the casing is in good condition. Compare the retread price and expected mileage against new tire cost per mile before deciding.
How do I calculate my tire cost per mile?
Divide what you paid for a tire (or full set) by the miles it actually ran before replacement. Comparing cost per mile across tire choices, rather than sticker price alone, is the only fair way to judge whether a pricier tire that lasts longer is actually the better deal.
What causes premature tire wear on a semi-truck?
Under-inflation is the most commonly cited cause of avoidable tire wear industry-wide, along with poor alignment, overloading, uneven weight distribution and aggressive driving. Checking pressure regularly and getting an alignment check at least annually are the highest-leverage ways to extend tire life.
