A tanker endorsement, or N endorsement, is a CDL add-on that lets a driver haul liquids or gases in a tank vehicle. A tank vehicle has tanks with an individual rated capacity over 119 gallons and a combined capacity of 1,000 gallons or more. The driver passes a knowledge test. No skills test is needed.

Key Points

  • A tank vehicle is a commercial motor vehicle designed to carry liquid or gas in tanks with an individual rated capacity of more than 119 gallons and a combined rated capacity of 1,000 gallons or more (49 CFR 383.5)
  • The tanks may be attached to the vehicle or the chassis permanently or temporarily
  • An empty storage tank not designed for transport, of 1,000 gallons or more, temporarily attached to a flatbed is not a tank vehicle (49 CFR 383.5)
  • The test is a knowledge test only (49 CFR 383.93(c)(3))
  • N is one of three endorsements allowed on a CLP, but a CLP holder with an N may operate only an empty tank vehicle (49 CFR 383.93(a)(2) and 383.153)
  • The entry-level driver training rule names Class A and B, passenger, school bus and hazmat. It does not name the N (49 CFR 380.609)
  • A CDL shows X when the driver has both tank vehicle and hazmat endorsements (49 CFR 383.153)
  • The 5-year renewal rule in 49 CFR 383.141(d) is for the hazmat endorsement. It is not a rule for the N

What is a tanker endorsement on a CDL?

It is the N endorsement on a commercial driver's license. It allows you to drive a tank vehicle, which carries liquid or gas in a tank. The federal test is a knowledge test, with no separate skills test for the N (49 CFR 383.93(c)(3)). The N applies to the endorsement, not to a license class. You still need the right class of CDL for the vehicle.

When do you need a tanker endorsement?

You need it to drive a tank vehicle. Under 49 CFR 383.5, that means a commercial motor vehicle designed to carry liquid or gas in tanks with an individual rated capacity of more than 119 gallons and a combined capacity of 1,000 gallons or more. The tanks may be attached to the vehicle or chassis permanently or temporarily. An empty storage tank not designed for transport, of 1,000 gallons or more, temporarily attached to a flatbed is not a tank vehicle. If you haul portable tanks or totes, ask your State licensing agency how it applies the rule.

How do you get a tanker endorsement?

Pass the tank vehicle knowledge test at your State licensing agency. You can add an N while holding a CLP. A CLP holder with an N may operate only an empty tank vehicle, and may not operate a tank that held hazardous materials and has not been purged of the residue (49 CFR 383.153). The entry-level driver training rule does not name the N, so it does not require a training provider for it (49 CFR 380.609).

Is a tanker endorsement the same as a hazmat endorsement?

No. The N covers the type of vehicle. The H covers the type of cargo. A truck with a tank of milk or water needs only the N. A tank of gasoline or another placarded hazardous material needs both. A CDL with both shows the code X (49 CFR 383.153). The H also needs a TSA security check. The N does not.

Does a tanker endorsement expire?

Federal rules set no separate renewal for the N the way they do for the H, which must be renewed every 5 years or less (49 CFR 383.141(d)). The N is part of your CDL, and your State sets when the CDL and its endorsements are renewed.
